Press release -

Filipstad - a frontrunner in fossil-free snack production

Orkla Snacks is investing in a fossil-free factory at the Filipstad site in Sweden by 2027, supported by external funding. The investment positions Orkla Snacks among the frontrunners in the transition to fossil-free snack production and marks a key milestone for the iconic brands OLW Cheez Doodles and OLW Chips.

The project is estimated to cost approximately SEK 90-110 million. The investment is funded with up to SEK 45 million in subsidies from Sweden’s Climate Leap programme (Klimatklivet). The investment will enable a full transition away from fossil fuels in the factory’s energy supply.

“This is a major milestone for Orkla Snacks. We are proud to be among the first to take this step towards fossil-free snack production. This decision turns our climate ambitions into action and represents a clear step towards reducing emissions from our own production,” says Ingvill T. Berg, CEO of Orkla Snacks.

Lower emissions from large-scale snack production

At the Filipstad site in Sweden, Orkla Snacks produces around 400,000 bags every day, including OLW Cheez Doodles – Sweden’s best-selling snack and one of the most popular snacks in Norway.

By replacing fossil LPG with renewable wood pellets as the main energy source for frying snacks, Orkla Snacks expects to reduce CO₂ emissions by nearly 6,000 tonnes per year, based on current production volumes.

“Reducing emissions from our own operations is a core priority for Orkla Snacks and matters to our employees, customers and consumers. By making the Filipstad factory fully fossil-free, we are taking an important step. The investment prepares the factory for future energy needs and regulations,” says Ingvill T. Berg.

Aligned with science-based climate targets

Orkla Snacks has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and is working systematically to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations. The investment at Filipstad is an important step in delivering on these targets.

Installation is scheduled to begin in 2026, with completion planned for 2027. The project will support both Orkla Snacks’ climate ambitions and the long-term, lower-emission production at the Filipstad site, where some of Orkla Snacks’ most iconic brands are produced.
