Urban Agriculture - New offer in SymbioCity from Plantagon

Urban Agriculture has become a fast growing field for Swedish cleantech companies and is now launched as a new offer to the cities of the world through SymbioCity. Plantagon took the initiative to develop the new offer Urban Agriculture within SymbioCity, and the offer is delivered in cooperation with Plantagon's partners SWECO, SAAB, Combitech and Tekniska Verken.

SymbioCity is a network of Swedish companies and organisations, within sustainable urban development, founded by the Swedish Government and Swedish Industry.

Urban Agriculture includes technology to use city space for growing plants and vegetables in high buildings, so-called vertical farming. The Swedish company Plantagon develops a vertical greenhouse and is world leader in the rapidly growing field.

"It is extremely exciting to follow the rapid development of Urban Agriculture. The fact that a rapidly increasing number of people are moving into urban areas today, puts enormous pressure on the cities. It has become necessary to develop smart and economic ways to produce food in a small area in the city", says Gustav Gorecki, Business Development Manager at Plantagon.

The advantage of growing plants vertically in a city - in a controlled environment - is that large amounts of vegetables can be produced and sold in a small area. In the closed environment of the greenhouse the use of water, energy and pesticides is minimized.

Plantagon recently broke ground in Linköping for the first Plantagon Greenhouse ever. It is to be built near the biogas plant of Tekniska Verken in Linköping.

"I am immensely proud that Linköping is the chosen site for the first vertical greenhouse. We will be the first city in the world to test the new technology and the systems involved to develop sustainable agricultural solutions for future cities", Paul Lindvall, Mayor of Linköping said in a press reelase.
