This year’s design jury bestowed the Red Dot: Best of the Best for outstanding design and product quality on two products. The distinctions went to the speed pedelec Stromer ST5 Pinion from Switzerland and the electric gravel bike ROTWILD R.R275 X from Germany.

The designers of the award-winning e-bikes will receive the “Trophy of Excellence” on stage at the Aalto-Theater Essen on 24 June 2024, the day of the award ceremony.

Florian Marti, Product Manager at myStromer
“Winning this distinction is confirmation that we are getting lots of things right in the premium segment. That range and power need a correspondingly large battery, which we have integrated seamlessly in the frame. As a con-sequence, the models have more volume, and the shape of the frame is more like a motorcycle than a traditional bicycle”. That’s how Florian Marti, Product Manager at myStromer, describes the shape of the speed pedelec.

Red Dot: Best of the Best 2024

The Stromer ST5 from Switzerland won the Red Dot: Best of the Best as the best speed pedelec, with a speed of up to 45 km/h and a stated range of 180 km. It is perfectly suited to longer city trips or for commuting between home and work.

“Switching from a car to an e-bike or a speed pedelec can save a con-siderable amount of carbon. An electric bike is an important first step on the road to refining more sustainable mobility solutions”, says Florian Marti, Product Manager at myStromer.

Red Dot: Best of the Best 2024

eGravel bike ROTWILD R.R275 X from Germany won the Red Dot: Best of the Best, the highest distinction in the Bicycles category. It is an all-terrain bike with a well-conceived design suitable for rough asphalt roads as well as gravel off-road paths.

“We wanted to make a bike that would be unmistakeable in terms of its design aesthetic”, says Tomas Fiegl, Lead Designer of the team responsible for the ROTWILD R.R275 X at ARTEFAKT Design in Darmstadt.

“The way the top tube extends visually into the taillight and the cockpit and front light are seamlessly integrated are distinctive design elements that give the bike its dynamic shape. It allowed us to create an unusually elongated silhouette”. That’s how Tomas Fiegl sums up their design approach.

Going forward, there continues to be potential in holistic bicycle design. On the one hand, the shape and aesthetic will be informed by the ergonomic requirements and geometrical specifications, while on the other there will still be design scope in the visible integration of individual components.

High-quality e-bikes as the driver of the bicycle industry

Market development

e-bikes have been driving the bicycle industry for years now. That is true not only in Germany, where e-bikes took more of the market share (53%) than traditional bicycles for the first time in 2023. In the Netherlands, Belgium and Austria, too, electronic bikes are overtaking traditional bikes.

Market share of e-bikes in selected European countries

Every second bike bought in those countries is an electric bike. This development is likewise reflected in the Red Dot Design Award. More than half of all award-winning bicycles are e-bikes.

Statement by Prof. Dr. Peter Zec

Founder of the Red Dot Design Award and CEO of Red Dot

“In the Red Dot Design Award, we are seeing the market for bicycles becoming a premium market for e-bikes with high-end specs, and this is happening across different product segments”, says Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, Founder of the Red Dot Design Award and CEO of Red Dot. “This is also reflected in the jury’s decision to award the Red Dot: Best of the Best distinction for the best e-bikes in 2024 to the electric gravel bike ROTWILD R.R275 X and the speed pedelec Stromer ST5. These are two exceptionally high-end bicycles from very different market segments”, explains Peter Zec in relation to the jury’s decision.
