“Tvarůžky” Cheese Festival in Olomouc

Try this special cheese, which you can smell a hundred miles away but tastes just great.

Do you know the old saying, the worse the cheese smells, the better it tastes? Try the smelly cheese of Olomouc and discover for yourself that this is true. In mid-April, all lovers of really good and very "fragrant" cheese will meet in Olomouc. The Olomouc cheese called “tvarůžky” or in other words “syrečky” of Loštice is a regional specialty protected by the trademark of the European Union. It is ripened cheese made of skimmed milk with a low fat content. The people of Moravia are so proud of it that they dedicated all of the municipal festivities to this cheese. The Olomouc festival of “tvarůžky” will be accompanied by Hanakia folklore groups and a presentation of local mini breweries so festival goers can wash down this piquant cheese.

Date: April 16, 2016

Type: Cheese festival

700 years of Charles IV – Celebrations at Kašperk Castle

The 700th birthday of Charles IV will also be celebrated at the castle, which was built by the King in order to defend the so-called Golden Path.

Kašperk Castle will commemorate 700 years from the birth of Charles IV, who Czechs call the "father of the country”. There will be jousting, dancing and feasting, just like in the Middle Ages, Kašperk Castle looks very romantic in the picturesque countryside of the Bohemian Forest, however, the reason for its construction was purely pragmatic. It was established by Charles IV in order to protect the economically important Golden Path on the border with Bavaria. For this reason, the castle towers offer beautiful views of the Bohemian Forest foothills. Kašperk Castle stands 886 meters above sea level, being the highest situated royal castle in the Czech Republic. Take a trip here and look around its surroundings the same way his Majesty Charles IV used to.

Kašperk Castle is one of many places, which were more or less influenced by Charles IV during his reign. He founded for example the spa town of Karlovy Vary, and also of course the iconic Charles Bridge over the River Vltava in Prague. There are many places similar to Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic; some of them may be viewed here.

Date: April - September, 2016

Type: Charles IV
