Acclaimed Baroque opera to be screened in palace park and in cinemas

Drottningholms Slottsteater is now to reach an even wider audience. Last year’s highly acclaimed production of Agrippina was recorded and will now be shown on a big screen in Drottningholm Palace Park free of charge on 14-16 July. From the late summer, opera buffs around Sweden will also be able to see Agrippina at Folkets Hus och Parker cinemas.

“The film brings us up close to the opera and we get to enjoy the orchestra, playing under the direction of Francesco Corti and an international cast of world-class calibre,” says the theatre’s artistic and managing director, Anna Karinsdotter.

Handel’s baroque opera Agrippina was staged at Drottningholms Slottsteater last August to much critical and public acclaim. However, audience numbers were limited due to the pandemic, so screenings in the Drottningholm Palace Park and in cinemas are now to be offered by way of compensation.

“It’s wonderful to bring this magnificent production to a wider audience,” says Karinsdotter. “For three summer evenings, audiences will be able to experience a wonderful Baroque opera from a picnic blanket on the grass, and in the autumn to sit back in a cinema seat and be transported to the unique 18th century environment of Drottningholms Slottsteater.”

Direction, stage design and costumes are by artistic duo Staffan Valdemar Holm and Bente Lykke Møller, and international star Ann Hallenberg sings the title role.

Agrippina in the Park is free to attend, and will be shown in the grounds of the Chinese Pavilion. Audience members are invited to bring their own picnic blankets or camping chairs as there will be no fixed seating. Tickets will be required for the cinema screenings. A full list of participating cinemas can be found here: www.folketshusochparker.se/evenemang/live-pa-bio-musik-opera/agrippina

The project has been made possible thanks to the generous support of private donors and Friends of Drottningholms Slottsteater, and additional grants from the Ministry of Culture.
