Beauty and the Beast returns for younger audiences

This year’s first production at Drottningholms Slottsteater is Beauty and the Beast, which will run from 15 to 22 May. Due to the pandemic, this newly written comic opera was shown to heavily restricted audiences last season. Now, more families and school classes can enjoy the show, which is based on an original work that premiered here 250 years ago.

The comic opera Zémire and Azor had its premiere at Drottningholms Slottsteater in 1778 after having conquered Europe in just a matter of years and earned a reputation as Marie-Antoinette’s favourite opera. It’s easy to understand why, with its vindictive elves, spirit ballets, a fearless young heroine and an unhappy Prince who’s been turned into a monster. Nowadays, adults and children know the story as Beauty and the Beast, a modern classic best known perhaps in its Disney rendition.

The Drottningholms Slottsteater version is based on the original Zémire and Azor by André Grétry and Jean-Francois Marmontel. The music is largely drawn from the 18th century work as is the newly-written libretto. On stage will be an actor with a dancer and musicians, along with a philosopher talking about the notion of transformation.

Last season’s production received favourable reviews.

I hope lots of children (and their adults) will get a chance to see “Skönheten och Odjuret” at Drottningholms slottsteater. Margareta Sörenson, Expressen

“With the aid of a tightly knit ensemble comprising an actor, a dancer and four musicians, plus a philosopher, a show has been created for a young audience that is as much about the art of drama itself as it is about love and transformation.” Thomas Olsson, Svenska Dagbladet

Drottningholms Slottsteater has remained intact since 1766 and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the only theatre of its kind in the world that still uses original hand operated stage machinery.
