Destination of the Year 2025 goes to Öland in Sweden and Colmar in France
"Destination of the Year Sweden 2025" goes to Öland and "Destination of the Year Europe 2025" goes to Colmar in France. The award was established by the digital travel magazine FREEDOMtravel and was presented at Elmia Husvagn Husbil - the largest camping fair in Scandinavia. The European destination is chosen by FREEDOMtravel, after their motorhome trips during the year, and the Swedish destination is voted for on Elmia's website.
"Destination of the year" for motorhome travellers
The "Destination of the Year" award has been established by the Swedish travel magazine freedomtravel.se to highlight wonderful travel destinations that welcome motorhome travelers and others who travel with camping vehicles. The prize, a glass motorhome, is awarded to a destination that offers:
- A good selection of stopovers and/or campsites
- A welcoming atmosphere for camping vehicles
- Unique experiences and attractions
- Preferably the opportunity to visit during a larger part of the year

Destination of the Year Sweden 2025: Öland
The Swedish award was voted for, among five nominated destinations, on Elmia's website during the spring and summer of 2025. The nominated destinations were: Söderhamn, Öregrund, Hunnebostrand, Kalmar and Öland. With a clear win, Öland took home the prize with the motivation:
Öland is a wonderful destination for motorhome travelers. On Öland you can experience fantastic beaches and beautiful nature, but also lots of history and culture. As a motorhome driver, you feel welcome, and there are plenty of nice camping pitches and campsites.
The award was presented on Friday, September 12, 2025, and a video greeting was played on stage from Hans Gerremo, chairman of Öland Besöksnäring AB. On Saturday, the award was presented to Eva Svärd, from Svensk Camping, who will forward the award to Öland.
Destination Europe of the Year 2025: Colmar, France
The winning destination in Europe was chosen by the travel magazine FREEDOMtravel, after many long motorhome trips in Europe. The motivation was:
Colmar is a lovely destination for motorhome travelers. In Colmar you can enjoy a picturesque city, filled with half-timbered houses and winding canals. Beyond the fairytale setting the city offers a warm welcome to motorhome travelers with several well-located campsites and stopovers.
The award was presented on Friday, September 12, 2025. The French destination Colmar was unable to attend the award ceremony, but the award has already been delivered to the tourist office in Colmar. Johny Royer, Director of the Colmar Tourist Office, warmly welcomes Swedish campers to Colmar!
