ReCarber joins Nordic Carbon Removal Association
ReCarber joins the Nordic Carbon Removal Association (NCRA) — Susanna Backman to chair Policy Working Group
ReCarber is proud to announce that we are joining the Nordic Carbon Removal Association (NCRA), a pan-Nordic, not-for-profit association working to scale credible, highly durable, and verified carbon dioxide removal (CDR) across the Nordics.
We’re also pleased to share that ReCarber’s Chief Commercial Officer, Susanna Backman, has been appointed Chair of NCRA’s Policy Working Group.
Why NCRA, why now
The Nordics have a unique opportunity to build a globally competitive carbon removal industry—one that strengthens climate action while creating durable economic value. NCRA’s mission and its core principles closely match how ReCarber approaches the market: driving both supply and demand for high-quality removals, supporting fit-for-purpose policy, and keeping integrity and durability at the center of scaling.
In particular, ReCarber strongly aligns with NCRA’s guiding principles:
- Building the Nordic CDR industry as a strategic priority by addressing demand, infrastructure gaps, and pragmatic growth.
- Positioning CDR as an essential pillar of carbon management, alongside CCS and CCU, while maintaining clear definitions of what counts as carbon removal.
- Adopting a pragmatic approach to CDR methods, recognizing that scaling requires a portfolio—accelerating mature, scalable, permanent approaches while supporting innovation.
- Supporting CDR with active engagement, and upholding the IPCC-aligned distinction that fossil point-source CCS is emissions reduction, not atmospheric CDR, and that CCU generally lacks durable storage.
- Science-driven, fit-for-purpose policy advocacy grounded in scientific consensus, with permanent removals playing a role in balancing residual emissions that cannot be reduced.
- Adhering to the Oxford Principles by putting emission reductions first, ensuring carbon removal complements—never substitutes—rapid decarbonization, and maintaining public credibility through integrity and permanence.
Strengthening policy to scale high-quality removals
As Chair of NCRA’s Policy Working Group, Susanna Backman will help convene members and stakeholders to advance policy frameworks that enable durable, verified carbon removal in the Nordics—supporting investment, infrastructure development, and market integrity.
“Scaling carbon removal responsibly requires both ambition and clarity,” said Susanna Backman, CCO at ReCarber. “I’m excited to work with NCRA members to help shape pragmatic, science-based policy that supports high-quality removals and builds a competitive Nordic industry.”
ReCarber’s membership in NCRA reflects our commitment to collaboration across the value chain—policy makers, buyers, project developers, transport and storage operators, and verification stakeholders—to scale carbon removal that is durable, measurable, and aligned with climate goals.
We look forward to contributing to NCRA’s work and to engaging with partners across the region.
