New Exhibition Reveals the Hidden Sharks of Sweden’s West Coast
Sharks have roamed the oceans for 450 million years. Several species inhabit Sweden’s West Coast – yet we still know remarkably little about them. In the exhibition Sharks, Camera, Action! visitors encounter sharks from Bohuslän to the Arctic through unique underwater films, new research, and personal stories from the deep. The exhibition opens on April 25, 2026, at The Maritime Museum and Aquarium.
The exhibition is initiated by internationally award-winning underwater cinematographer Christina Karliczek Skoglund, who has spent more than 15 years filming beneath the surface.
– I’ve always been fascinated by life underwater – especially sharks. They are essential to ocean ecosystems, yet we still know far too little about them. With this exhibition, we want to offer rare, exciting insights into their world and challenge long-standing Hollywood myths. Most shark species, for example, are not dangerous to humans, says Christina Karliczek Skoglund.
Five Sharks – From Bohuslän to the Arctic
Visitors follow Karliczek Skoglund on expeditions from Sweden’s West Coast to the Arctic depths of Greenland, encountering the ancient Greenland shark – Earth’s longest-living vertebrate – the endangered spiny dogfish, the bioluminescent Velvet Belly Lantern Shark, the Small-spotted Catshark, and the Basking Shark, the world’s second-largest fish and a gentle giant occasionally sighted off Sweden’s coast. They are all brought to life through immersive underwater films and engaging cinematography that reveal sharks rarely seen by human eyes.
Behind the Camera: A Woman in a Male-Dominated Field
The exhibition also turns the lens on the filmmaker herself. Working in extreme, technically demanding environments, Karliczek Skoglund shares insights from a profession where women remain severely underrepresented.
– Visitors gain not only a unique window into the lives of sharks, but also behind-the-scenes access to one of the most challenging fields in wildlife filmmaking. It’s an inspiring story of courage, persistence, and passion, says Pernilla Elmtén, curator at The Maritime Museum and Aquarium.
Inspiring Ocean Engagement
More than 500 shark species are documented worldwide. Around 15 have been recorded in Swedish waters, yet many remain poorly understood and increasingly threatened by overfishing, pollution and climate change.
– Our mission is to inspire engagement with the ocean from both marine biological and cultural perspectives. With Sharks, Camera, Action! we aim to deepen public understanding of sharks and their vital importance to marine biodiversity, says Carina Sjöholm, Museum Director at The Maritime Museum and Aquarium.
