Smart Refill authorised as E-money Institution

Smart Refill has been authorised as an E-money Institution by the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (SFSA). The license shows that Smart Refill is a trusted partner and enables the company to offer secure payment solutions throughout the European market in line with PSD2 and Open Banking.

Payment and account services are a central part of Smart Refill’s offer to banks, fintechs and telecom operators. Being an experienced payment service provider, the company complies with the payment card industry’s global security standard PCI-DSS since 2011. With the newly obtained permit from the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (SFSA, Finansinspektionen), Smart Refill can fully utilize the possibilities offered by the second European Payment Services Directive PSD2 and the Open Banking Standard.

As an E-money Institution (EMI), Smart Refill can act as a Payment Institution (PI), providing comprehensive services for the end-users of the mobile banks, fund apps and prepaid apps that the company develops. Smart Refill has been designated as both an Account Information Service Provider (AISP) and a Payment Initiation Service Provider (PISP). Through the Open Banking standard, it’s possible to fetch account information and initiate payments directly from the user’s bank accounts throughout the EES. The license also gives Smart Refill the right to issue E-money, as one of four companies in Sweden except traditional banks. This opens up for further development of secure solutions in card issuing and e-Wallets.

- The approval by SFSA shows that Smart Refill is a thrust-worthy partner with the proper system and risk controls in place. We are now in an even stronger position to help our customers thrive in the open banking ecosystem. It’s also an important step in our growth strategy on the European market, says Henric Ungh, CEO at Smart Refill.
