Record audience on the water – Scandinavia's first Boat-In Cinema attracted over 4,000 visitors

On Friday evening, the Stockholm Film Festival made film history when the Nordic region's first cinema screening on water – a boat-in – took place at Riddarfjärden. With a double-sided floating cinema screen, beautifully located by the City Hall, over 4,000 visitors gathered – both on land and in the water – to watch Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou together at sunset.

The audience arrived in everything from boats, kayaks, SUPs and rubber dinghies. On land, thousands spread out picnic blankets in Stadshusparken, creating a real summer festival atmosphere. The film was shown simultaneously on both sides of the screen, so that both the land and water audiences had an optimal film experience.

"We are incredibly proud to have organised the Nordic region's first boat-in cinema – and that so many people chose to experience film in this unique way with us. Watching The Life Aquatic bob along on a double-sided screen at sunset, surrounded by kayaks, rubber boats and picnic blankets, was a magical experience. This is exactly the kind of innovative film culture we want to create," says Magnus Larsson, Head of Marketing at the Stockholm Film Festival.

The event received widespread coverage in both the press and on the radio, including Swedish NationalRadio, which broadcast live from the venue and spoke to visitors about this unique evening. Interest was enormous, and many expressed their hope that this would become a recurring summer tradition.

boat-in is part of the Stockholm Film Festival's tribute to Sommarbio, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. Sommarbio is an outdoor cinema that is free and open to everyone. Every year, tens of thousands of visitors gather in Rålambshovsparken in Stockholm to socialise, listen to music and watch fantastic films under the open sky.

Sommarbio runs from 13 to 17 August. Read more about Sommarbio and Stockholm Film Festival events at stockholmfilmfestival.se
