Remixing the Future - new exhibition at the Museum of Ethnography in Sweden
Diana Agunbiade-Kolawole, Andreas Nur, and Theresa Traore Dahlberg address the Museum of Ethnography's African collections in a joint exhibition. Through three separate works, the artists ask questions about style, memory, advertising, desire, colonialism, and family history. Remixing the Future opens on October 9th, under Afro-Swedish History Week. Free admission to the museum.
Remixing the Future is an exhibition created by Diana Agunbiade-Kolawole, Andreas Nur, and Theresa Traore Dahlberg. While studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, they were members of the group that founded the art collective OUFF. The group creates interdisciplinary site-specific works focusing on processes and the shared experience. The trio has researched the Museum of Ethnography's collections and archives from the African continent for a while. Through three separate works in different mediums, the artists ask questions about style, memory, advertising, desire, colonialism, and family history.
- Remixing the Future contrasts the colonial logic that made the collection possible with a narrative that follows the winding migration paths that characterize the African diaspora. What historical burdens do the collections carry? What stories will they inspire in the future? says Michael Barrett, the Curator for Africa at the museum.
Through the aesthetics of the remix - to create something new from something old and make it their own - objects and photos from the museum's collections are placed in unexpected contexts, predicting different futures. Proven techniques such as still life, video collage, and bronze casting are used to bridge history and the present.
The exhibition is part of Ongoing Africa. An exploratory and method-development dialogue project aiming to highlight new perspectives on the African continent with and by Swedes of African origin. The project's ambition is also to make the African collections relevant to broader and more contemporary audiences.
Remixing the Future opens October 9th, 2021, and ends January 9th, 2022.
Free admission.
