Topics and summaries of the lectures:

Weapons of Mass Disturbance

Jukka Savolainen from the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats based his presentation on a Working Paper “Hybrid Threats and Vulnerabilities of Modern Critical Infrastruture – Weapons of Mass Disturbance?" that was published in 2019.

Geopolitics of the Global Energy Transition.

Dr Peter Burgherr from the Swiss institute Paul Scherrer talked about the geopolitics of renewables, minerals and metals for low-carbon technologies, emerging and novel technologies (e.g. CCUS, Direct Air Capture, role of hydrogen, etc.) governance, financing and infrastructure, geographic trends (USA, Europe, Russia, MENA, etc.), selected threats (physical, cyber, hybrid).

Hydrogen gas

Dr Cecilia Wallmark from Luleå Technical University gave an overview of how hydrogen could be used and distributed, its advantages and present status and barriers for implementation. One of the main characteristics of hydrogen is its potential to increase local security of supply, possible to produce everywhere and to store.

Threats against the renewable energy system

Johan Wiktorin and Mina Nadjafi from Intil Group talked about direct and indirect attacks against OT/IT and even physical attacks and gave concrete examples how things have played out in real life in order to expand consciousness regarding attack vectors, when dealing with risk treatment in the industry.

Zero-Trust in Energy Systems and National Defense

Dr Britta Hale and Abigail Staffnik from the Naval Postgraduate School in the USA gave a lecture that explores the role of Zero-Trust security in modern energy systems and its impact on national defense. Based on research and case studies by the Technical University of Denmark, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, and the Naval Postgraduate School, the talk will highlight how Zero-Trust enhances cybersecurity and reduces risks in Systems of Systems and across system lifecycles.
