Moi Helsinki! Your next weekend started on March 29
Umeå is closer than you think – and more than you expect. On March 29, Finnair launched a direct route from Helsinki, making it easier than ever to travel here for a weekend. In just three days, you can experience culture, nature, flavors, and moments that feel bigger than the distance on the map. Here are seven tips worth the journey – see you in Umeå.
1. Guitars – The Museum I A treasure of guitars
Right in the heart of Umeå you’ll find Guitars – The Museum – one of the world’s largest private guitar collections. Over several decades, two passionate brothers have built a unique treasure trove of Fenders, Gibsons, and immortal rock history. This is more than a museum. It’s a tribute to the power of music, to craftsmanship – and to true, top-level nerdiness.
2. Tornhuset I Sweden’s new gastronomic hotspot
In the old steam turbine power plant by the river, Umeå’s most ambitious restaurant venture has taken shape. At Tornhuset, three different concepts come together under one roof – led by the fine dining restaurant Ateljé Vita Duken. Behind it are star restaurateur Mathias Dahlgren and Per “Perka” Söderberg, aiming for stars and international recognition. The restaurant has already been named Destination of the Year by Dagens Industri. It’s already the talk of Sweden. And you’re just an hour away.
3. Norrlandsoperan I Tosca in northern Sweden
At Norrlandsoperan, opera, dance, music, and art meet in northern Sweden’s largest performing arts venue. This spring, Tosca is on stage – Giacomo Puccini’s intense drama of passion, power, and resistance. At the center are the opera singer Floria Tosca, her beloved Mario Cavaradossi, and the ruthless Scarpia. A thriller-like interpretation that adds a dramatic highlight to your weekend (performed March 28–April 28).
4. Väven I Umeå’s most debated building
Is it ugly? Is it beautiful? Does it resemble a stranded ferry from Finland? Opinions about Väven are many – and that’s exactly why it’s worth a visit. Rising along the Ume River, the building serves as the city’s modern living room, where libraries, stages, and a cinema share space with hotels, restaurants, and cafés. It also houses the Women’s History Museum – Sweden’s first of its kind. A place that sparks emotions and captures the pulse of contemporary Umeå.
5. Facit Bar I Uncompromising cocktail culture
People in Umeå are crazy about cocktails. Some of the world’s leading bartenders have trained here, and the cocktail culture thrives with everything from local specialties to classic flavors. Facit Bar is a cocktail bar spanning over 1,000 square meters, built entirely on Swedish ingredients – right in the center of Umeå. Led by renowned bartender Emil Åreng, the bar has put Umeå on the international cocktail scene. Here, world-unique drinks are mixed with uncompromising creativity and award-winning design – proof that bold ideas often become the most memorable.
6. Bildmuseet I AI and the Paradox of Agency
Who really holds the power in a time when artificial intelligence becomes part of our lives? In the exhibition AI and the Paradox of Agency, new works and key pieces by international artists explore the relationship between humans and machines. Through interactive games, installations, sculptures, and a hand-painted textile narrated by a drone, the exhibition shows how art can help us understand – and challenge – our technological present and future. The exhibition is shown at Bildmuseet, one of Europe’s leading venues for contemporary art – always with free admission.
7. Granö Beckasin I Eco-hotel in nature
Sleep among the treetops, paddle along the river, and enjoy local delicacies. Granö Beckasin has transformed a run-down campsite into one of Västerbotten’s most exciting destinations. Here, you can enjoy nature experiences and gastronomy all year round. Sustainability runs like a green thread throughout the entire experience, from accommodation to adventures and dining.
