Reliefed Technologies secures new patent for 3D electrodes, for higher power density in batteries

Varberg, Sweden – January 16, 2024 – Reliefed Technologies, a Swedish company with the pioneering z.trusion® technology, today announced the grant of a patent on a new production method for 3D electrodes. This latest addition to Reliefed Technologies’ patent portfolio further strengthens the company’s position in battery technology innovation.

“Our granted IP means that investments in further development of 3D electrodes are protected for us and our future customers,” said Mark J Kragh, Chief Innovation Officer. “This is a testament to our commitment to innovation and our dedication to address challenges in the realm of energy and electrification. By showcasing the potential of our technology, we aim to demonstrate its capability in achieving the desired performance and providing solutions for advanced battery technology.”

The z.trusion® technology, invented, patented and licensed by Reliefed Technologies, utilizes a rotating die in the pressurized zone of an extruder to form almost any mass-produced, three-dimensionally shaped object. The technology is 100% compatible with existing extrusion lines, enabling quick implementation and conversion to 3D mass production.

The new patent specifically focuses on 3D electrodes, anodes and cathodes in batteries enabling precise micro and macro structures. This technology has the potential to enable new battery technologies by manufacturing the sought-after 3D texture to increase the electrochemical reaction surface of anodes and cathodes, resulting in increased energy density and possibly power density in cells.

“This new patent is a significant milestone for Reliefed Technologies,” said Kragh. “It allows us to combine 3D features that potentially can speed up electrolyte filling of cells, further enhancing the performance and efficiency of battery production.”

With this latest patent, Reliefed Technologies now holds a total of 36 granted patents within 15 patent families and has 56 patents pending globally. The company remains dedicated to continuous innovation, filing new patents regularly. Additionally, Reliefed Technologies possesses a substantial body of know-how and proprietary trade secrets shared within the extrusion network. Leveraging its core intellectual property, the company has developed a comprehensive technology platform addressing various manufacturing domains, driven by the imperative need for technical solutions in creating a more efficient world.
