Reliefed’s z.truded® battery cooling plate delivers at Polestar battery test lab

Reliefed and Polestar are collaborating to drive innovation and advance technology as part of an EIC (European Innovation Council) funded project: “z.truded® tab cooled battery solution”. A customised z.trusion® cooling plate, adapted for a Polestar prototype battery pack module, has now been tested at Polestar with positive results.

z.trusion® enables a battery pack design with a high degree of freedom in modularity, weight reduction, cooling performance and increased structural strength. The design enables the use of recyclable aluminium, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

The prototype battery plate was tested at Polestar battery test lab, showing promising results when compared to a Polestar reference cooling plate. Further Advanced Engineering activities are now planned to further explore possible solutions, moving forward with the aim of a more efficient and economical battery solution for the future.

Focus will now be on developing the z.trusion® tool, which will be used to produce the cooling plates. To enable production, the commissioning of a new tech centre, including an aluminium z.trusion® line, is initiated. Reliefed, with support from Fraunhofer Institute, will decide on a suitable approach for enabling series production of complete cooling plates, including post-processing steps. Polestar is supporting this development acting as a sounding board, actively providing input to the design process and co-evaluating results.

"It is always very encouraging to be part of physical tests showing promising results of a design enabled through z.trusion®, both from a cost and functional perspective. Thanks to the Polestar team for a great collaboration to this point."
– Marcus Berggren, CTO at Reliefed

”When designing next-generation battery packs Polestar is committed to optimizing both performance and sustainability. This is an interesting technology that we are evaluating as a part of our Advanced Engineering work.”
– Jens Groot, Chief Engineer Battery System at Polestar
