4 ways to reduce textile waste

During April and Earth Month, we are turning the spotlight on textile waste. It is one of the biggest problems when it comes to the fashion industry. In Europe, we use a piece of clothing 7–8 times before throwing it away. For Earth Month this year, we encourage you to consume less and instead take care of the clothes you already own. Hopefully, we can inspire you to buy less, wash less, wash right, and care more

Buy less

Capsule wardrobe
One big problem when it comes to textile waste is the amount of clothes that we buy and the urge to always follow trends. To reduce textile waste, we all must reconsider how we consume clothes. One way to do it is to build your own capsule wardrobe. Instead of buying new clothes all the time, invest in a few key items to build a timeless capsule wardrobe. Learn how to succeed with a capsule wardrobe in our step-by-step guide.

Sleep on it
Have you found a garment you instantly feel like you need to buy? Sometimes this feeling is just an impulse. Delay the decision until the following day by sleeping on it. If you wake up and still think about this piece of clothing, it might be a good indicator that you actually should buy it. Make sure to also have a look in your wardrobe to see what you already have and if this new piece is something that would complement your collection of clothes.

Wash less

Overwashing is one of the biggest problems when it comes to textile waste. We wash our clothes way too often, causing them to fade in color, shrink, and lose their shape. There are several ways to refresh your clothes between washes – we’ve listed some of our best tips.

1.Steaming
Steaming is a great way to refresh clothes between washes. The hot steam removes wrinkles, bad odors, and bacteria, eliminating signs of the garments being worn.

2. Brushing
Try to brush off dirt or fuzz from your jeans or jackets with a clothing brush instead of putting them in the laundry basket. It might be enough to prolong the time between washes.

3. Airing
Airing is the most simple and natural way to refresh clothes. Hang your worn clothes outside to air overnight, and they will smell and feel fresh in the morning.

Wash right

Do you know how to wash right? Not following the care label instructions is one of the biggest reasons why clothes get worn out quickly and end up in landfills. It's also important to use the right laundry products and techniques when washing and drying to prevent unnecessary wear and tear on your clothes.

When washing your clothes and textiles make sure to sort them carefully by color to prevent color bleeding. Choose a gentle washing cycle on the machine. By lowering the temperature, you will make your clothes last longer. Steamery offers laundry detergents that are effective even from 20°C.

Choose the right detergent
Different kinds of garments require different kinds of laundry detergents. At Steamery, we have high-efficiency laundry detergents specially developed to nourish all kinds of fabrics and make them clean without losing their colors. Our All Colors Laundry Detergent makes your clothes stay colorful and vibrant and our White Laundry Detergent keep the fabrics white without containing any bleach.

Care more

By doubling a garment's lifespan, you reduce its greenhouse gas emission footprint by 50%. Therefore, we want to inspire you to care for, repair, and reuse your favorite garments repeatedly. Give new life to the clothes you already own.

Repair
Repairing a broken hem or replacing a missing button is not hard. We’ve gathered our mending tutorials in one place so you can learn five easy hacks that can make your torn clothes feel wearable again.

Cherish your wardrobe
An important step for a long-lasting wardrobe is to care for the garments you already own. Discover our care guide and learn how to take care of different materials.

Spruce up your clothes
It’s natural for pilling to occur on well-loved clothes, and it can be easily managed with a fabric shaver. Spruce up your knits and clothes by using a fabric shaver to remove all pilling. Then finish off with steaming the garments and spritz some fabric spray on them and your clothes will feel like new again.

Pass them on to a new owner
If you take proper care of your clothes - steaming between washes, mending when broken and washing them the right way, they will last much longer and keep their value. When you feel that a garment isn’t sparking any joy for you anymore you can then pass them on to a new owner instead of throwing them away.
