Life Science Success Returns: BIO-Europe Chooses Stockholm for 2027
Stockholm has been selected as the host city for BIO-Europe 2027, Europe's most important partnering conference in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. The confirmed return, following the successful 2024 event, means that Swedens leading life science ecosystem will once again become the global meeting place for research, investment, innovation, and the deals that drive future medical breakthroughs.
Stockholm and Stockholmsmässan (Stockholm Exhibition & Convention Centre) have once again been chosen to host BIO-Europe, one of the most vital meeting places for the global life science industry on C-level. The event, planned for late October, returns following the success of the 2024 conference, which gathered over 5,500 delegates from more than 60 countries and generated over 30,000 business meetings.
“The decision to return confirms the greater Stockholm regions position as one of Europe's leading life science hubs, It strengthens the region's international appeal for the global biotech and pharmaceutical industry and demonstrates the confidence placed in our thriving ecosystem,“ says Staffan Ingvarsson, CEO of Stockholm Business Region.
Stockholm-Uppsala’s Global Strength in Life Science
The Stockholm-Uppsala region was ranked number six, out of 41, among Europe's life science hubs (JLL) and is home to world-renowned institutions such as the Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital, ranked number 5 globally. With over 1859 life science companies, Stockholm-Uppsala has established a strong cluster in innovation and research.
Sweden's life science sector continues to show exceptional growth. In 2023, pharmaceuticals became the country's second-largest export sector, valued at SEK 150 billion accounting for 7 percent of total exports. The Stockholm Uppsala region accounts for approximately 48 percent of all life science companies in Sweden.
The Perfect Venue for International Collaboration
BIO-Europe brings together the entire life science value chain – from early-stage startups to multinational pharmaceutical companies – focusing on driving innovation and business development. The conference content includes trend analyses in areas such as AI in drug development, advanced therapies, and big data.
Claire Macht, Portfolia Director, Europe at EBD Group, highlights Stockholm-Uppsala’s unique combination of market strength and research infrastructure as crucial to the choice.
“BIO-Europe is excited to be returning to Stockholm for the second time. The biotech ecosystem here is collaborative, entrepreneurial, and holds deep scientific expertise. These are all qualities that BIO-Europe seeks to build and foster in the global life science community, making Stockholm a perfectly positioned host for this event,“ says Claire Macht.
Anna-Karin Werner, Director of Congress & Guest Event at Stockholmsmässan, also looks forward to once again welcoming the event and building on our previous achievements and add value.
“We are honoured to once again welcome BIO-Europe to Stockholmsmässan. Their decision to return reflects our role as a key meeting place for the region’s business community, as well as our ability to deliver complex, end-to-end solutions for international congresses. It also highlights Stockholm’s position as an attractive and competitive congress destination,“ says Anna-Karin Werner.
