Swedish fika and students in focus at GastroNord

On Friday, May 9, the GastroNord food fair, which will be held May 6-9, will turn its focus to cafés, pastry shops, bakeries and students with a number of activities. For example, Sweden’s best barista for 2014 and Student Chef of the Year will be announced.

“The Swedish fika, the coffee break, is well cherished and established in our culture and in terms of sales, cafés are one of the sectors of the industry showing the best growth. It is important that we highlight this area, which is why we are having this theme day,” says Daniel Fritzdorf, Event Manager for GastroNord and Vinordic.

Sweden’s best barista and ice cream school
In the final of Swedish Barista Cup 2014, six of the country’s best baristas have 15 minutes to serve each of the four judges an espresso, a cappuccino and a signature drink. Three of the finalists come from Drop Coffee in Stockholm, one of whom is Linnea Vannesjö.

“In last year’s Barista Cup I made it to the semifinals, so it is really exciting that I am in the finals this year. I am very nervous, but there is a lot to be done in preparation. I practice with my colleagues, Alexander Ruas and Benjamin Norman, but of course in the final we are competing against one another.”

The other finalists are Patrik Karlsson (da Matteo), Joel Wredlert (Kafé Esaias) and Tobias Palm (Johan & Nyström). For visitors who want to learn more about coffee, the Swedish Barista National Team will be running a coffee school at the fair. Different pastry demonstrations will also be held during the day and the Swedish Pastry Chef of the Year association will hold an ice cream school on the GastroNord stage.

Student Chef of the Year and special guided tour
On Friday, May 9, GastroNord will also turn its attention to the future of the industry – the students. The Student Chef of the Year will be announced and students can also apply in advance for a guided tour and, for example, to listen and be inspired by the Swedish Chef of the Year association, the Swedish Pastry Chef of the Year association, the French area with 40+ companies, etc.

The beverage trade fair Vinordic and the Bocuse d’Or European Chef Championship, the world’s most prestigious chef competition, will also be going on at the same time at Stockholmsmässan. GastroNord and Vinordic are Northern Europe’s largest trade fairs for hotels, restaurants, catering and fast food. The fairs are arranged every other year at Stockholmsmässan.
