Turning up the heat at GastroNord and Vinordic

Week 17 sees the main event of the year within the hotel, restaurant and catering industry, when GastroNord (24-27 April) and Vinordic (25-27 April) are held at Stockholmsmässan. This year’s fairs will attract the culinary élite from Sweden, Finland and Norway. There will also be all manner of new features, including the new Chef of the Year area.

The heat is on in the Nordic region – rarely has there been such an interest in gastronomy. Horeca (hotels, restaurants and catering) is one of Sweden’s biggest industries, with an annual turnover of around SEK 30 billion and approximately 145,000 employees.

This year’s GastroNord will feature plenty of chefs. Many of Sweden’s leading chefs will be attending the fair in connection with the new Chef of the Year area, which is being arranged in association with the Chef of the Year Association. Six previous winners of the title will be putting together a restaurant and a menu, contributing one dish each: a total of four main courses and two starters. The deserts will come courtesy of honorary member Magnus Johansson. The chefs will also be talking about gastronomic developments in Sweden during the 29 years of the competition.

To promote the fair as an effective meeting place, there will be a number of specially built meeting rooms, named after previous winners of the Chef of the Year title. Visitors and exhibitors can use the new meeting booking system InvitePeople at www.gastronord.se to pre-book meetings ahead of the fair.

“With the new system, visitors and exhibitors can set up creative, profitable meetings even more effectively,” explains Daniel Fritzdorf, project manager for GastroNord and Vinordic. “Now they can plan their visit to the fair, see who will be there, arrange meetings, buy tickets and book a place at one of our breakfast seminars – all at the same time.”

As always, the fair will also include several competitions, such as Skolmatsgastro, a competition for Sweden’s school cooks, and the Nordic Friendly Challenge, at which the national culinary teams from Finland, Norway and Sweden will be competing against each other.

At Vinordic, the winners of the Vinordic Wine Challenge 2012 competition, which recognises Sweden’s best-value wines, will be chosen. This is the Nordic region’s only EU-certified wine competition.

GastroNord and Vinordic are Northern Europe’s biggest trade fairs for hotels, restaurants, catering and fast food. The fairs are held every other year at Stockholmsmässan.
