Adult Supervision Is Sweden’s Oscar Submission

Alex Schulman’s Adult Supervision, starring Gustaf Skarsgård, Fares Fares and Linus Wahlgren, has been selected as Sweden’s official submission for the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards, the Swedish Film Institute’s Oscar Committee announced today at Filmhuset in Stockholm.

– I’ve never made a film before, and to write and direct a film as a first-time filmmaker, only for it to go on to represent Sweden at the Academy Awards, is simply overwhelming. I’m thrilled and deeply grateful, and I promise everyone who believed in the film and supported it that I’ll do everything I can to take it all the way to the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre, says director Alex Schulman.

When three fathers chaperone their teenage daughters on a rowdy school trip to a remote island, tensions quickly escalate and their grip on the situation begins to slip. As buried memories resurface, games turn into power struggles — and power into violence. Soon no one can tell: who is in charge, and who is in danger? 

– Alex Schulman’s debut feature demonstrates a remarkable storytelling drive which, together with its themes and performances, gives us confidence that it can make a strong impression on Academy voters. Adult Supervision is a film that refuses to let its audience off the hook. Uncomfortable laughter, awkward situations, moments of recognition, and an internationally renowned cast, all set against the backdrop of the Stockholm archipelago, make it stand out in the best possible way. We are now keeping our fingers crossed that it will advance to the shortlist, secure a nomination, and go even further, says Petter Mattsson, Chair of the Swedish Oscar Committee and Head of the International Department at the Swedish Film Institute.

Later in September, the film will have its world premiere in competition at the prestigious genre festival Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. The film’s festival journey will then continue with a screening in the Gala section at the Zurich Film Festival. The film will have its first theatrical release in Iceland on 24 September, as part of the Reykjavik International Film Festival.

Adult Supervision is written and directed by Alex Schulman and features a star-studded Swedish cast including Gustaf Skarsgård (Vikings), Fares Fares (Rogue One and Cairo Conspiracy) and Linus Wahlgren (Clark). The film is produced by Christina Legkova for Warner Bros. ITVP, in co-production with RMV Film, Tiisch Film, Film Stockholm and Scanbox, with support from the Swedish Film Institute's film commissioner Hanna Lejonqvist Sobieski.

The film is distributed in Sweden by Scanbox Entertainment and will be released in Swedish cinemas on October 9 2026. International sales are handled by sales company Heretic. Adult Supervision has so far been sold for theatrical distribution in Italy (Fandango), Australia and New Zealand (Palace Films), Hungary (Vertigo Releasing), the Czech Republic and Slovakia (CinemArt), the former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria (MCF), Poland (Mayfly), Lithuania (Taip Toliau), Estonia (Estinfilm) and Latvia (Riga FF).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the 15-film shortlist for the International Feature Film category on December 15, 2026, while nominations in all categories will be revealed on January 21, 2027. The 99th Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on March 14, 2027.

Over the years, 17 Swedish films have been nominated in the Best International Feature Film category, with four going on to win the Academy Award: Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring (1960), Through a Glass Darkly (1961) and Fanny and Alexander (1983), as well as Bille August’s Pelle the Conqueror (1987). Last year, Tarik Saleh’s Eagles of the Republic was selected as Sweden’s official Oscar submission.
