Swedish Presence at the 79th Cannes Film Festival
The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival features Niki Lindroth von Bahr’s short film The End, as well as two Swedish co-productions selected for the Official Competition.

The End by Niki Lindroth von Bahr (short film competition)
Sweden, France and Denmark
Niki Lindroth von Bahr returns to Cannes with her stop-motion short film The End, in competition for the Short Film Palme d’or. The Burden which screened in the Directors' Fortnight section at Cannes in 2017, proceeded to win over 80 international awards and is ranked among the 100 greatest short films of all time. The voice cast features Alexander Skarsgård, Tuva Novotny, Noomi Rapace and Denis Lavant.
Swedish Co-productions
Fjord by Cristian Mungiu (competition)
The film is a Romanian-French-Norwegian-Danish-Finnish co-production.
Gentle Monster by Marie Kreutzer (competition)
The film is an Austrian-German-Swedish-French co-production.
Producers on the Move
This years Swedish Producer on the Move is Linda Mutawi, who, among other films produced Eagles of the Republic by Tarik Saleh, which was nominated for the Palme d’or last year.
Swedes doing jury duty
This year, Stellan Skarsgård serves on the Palme d’or jury, following recent acclaim from Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes last year. Director and screenwriter Magnus von Horn (The Girl with the Needle) will serve on the jury for Short Films and La Cinef. Sweden’s presence on Cannes juries spans decades, from Bibi Andersson in 1972 and cinematographer Sven Nykvist in 1990, to Lena Olin in 1998 and Noomi Rapace in 2022. Ingrid Bergman served as jury president in 1973 as did Ruben Östlund in 2023.
