Truck and trailer together make a strong team. In particular, there is enormous power in the intelligent cooperation of a tractor unit and semitrailer. The Swiss forwarder G. Leclerc Transport AG is making targeted use of this: the company's entire fleet (200 tractor units and 160 semi-trailers) is equipped with telematics from idem telematics.
The BPW "AirSave" tyre control system has become a bestseller because it saves tyres, fuel and nerves - and already returns a profit within its first year. BPW now supplies a telematics kit that automatically warns drivers, dispatchers and other recipients via an app, an online portal, email or SMS as soon as a tyre weakens.
An autonomous trailer will be an integral part of the autonomous transport systems of the future – after all, this is where goods are actually transported. This is also why Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is funding a three-year research project to investigate the conditions necessary for a trailer that can be used autonomously. BPW is leading the consortium.
The precision and unconditional reliability of truck and trailer telematics is essential for the transport of food and pharmaceuticals and idem telematics impressed the expert jury of the Telematics Awards with its innovative, tried and tested solutions. A successful start for motionist.com: just one year after its launch, BPW's online transport and logistics portal has been awarded with the Automotive Brand Contest. The German Design Council's renowned international brand and design competition has honoured motionist.com as winner in the Digital category.
The transport and logistics industry is on the brink of a radical transformation. The surprise: It is not the towing vehicle but the trailer that is driving the digital transformation – from vehicle construction to transport management to maintenance. BPW, a family enterprise from North-Rhine Westphalia, which is strengthening its lead as "Digital Champion" is providing the key technologies.
The BPW Group has acquired a stake in UZE Mobility GmbH. The Bremen-based start-up is setting up a worldwide Big Data marketplace on an AI basis to collect and market environment and mobility data. Previous developers of the company include Prof. Dr. Ing. Achim Kampker and the MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology Boston.
Between 2017 and 2018, BPW Bergische Achsen KG reduced its CO2 emissions by 60 percent to 7,855 tonnes. This dramatic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at the main production plant was made possible by shifting to green electricity and e-mobility. However, the family business sees the highest potential for more climate protection in its innovations for transport and logistics.
The Nagel-Group has over 7,000 vehicles in operation across Europe in order to deliver foodstuffs such as dairy products and fruit fresh, safe and on time to customers. "Our telematics requirements are accordingly high and very complex," explains Arthur Ebel, Fleet in Corporate Procurement & Fleet Management Supervisor of the Nagel-Group. "Idem telematics completely won us over here."

Some 100 top decision makers from the transport and logistics sectors met at the Wiehler Forum to discuss the issues that will shape the future of the industry. This year, the summit will also have a lasting impact outside the industry – for the first time ever, the participants set the agenda for a political dialogue with members of the German parliament in Berlin.
Europe's leading trailer telematics system is also the best. Contractors and cultivators can now continuously digitally monitor the total weight and the usable load of their drawbar trailers – even during use: the running gear computer AGRO Hub, which BPW will present at Agritechnica 2019, controls and measures the use of spreaders and loading and feed mixers. Even transport drawbar trailers are saved the detour via weighbridges and yard scales.
With the digitalisation of running gear technologies, adding digital connectivity to commercial vehicles and logistics processes as well as innovative electric drive systems, BPW is increasingly positioning itself as an innovation leader in the industry. Now BPW is also restructuring its corporate communications – its new online portal motionist.com centres on interaction with readers.
The global logistics leader Deutsche Post DHL is equipping its fleet of trailers across Europe with telematics systems from idem telematics. Based in Munich and Ulm, idem telematics is part of the BPW Group and specialises in digital networking of transport vehicles.
Of all German prizes for innovation, the ‘Top 100’ award plays a unique role: it’s the only competition to honour mid-sized businesses for their innovation management.
