Fear of loss is greater than a desire to gain

A conventional sales technique that plays into behavioural aspects of the customer is the focus on what the consumer is missing out on, rather than what they stand to gain. More colloquially referred to as ‘Fear of Missing Out’ (FOMO), individuals hate to appear to miss out on anything.

This technique triggers the ‘fight or flight’ reaction in the human brain, which causes a trigger action to be taken declares Latona Fox. When an individual finds out there is a limited amount of something left; they are more inclined to make a purchase. Latona Fox is urging sales and marketing agencies to implement this principle in their strategies to appeal to the customer’s fear of missing out.

Understand habituation

Latona Fox argues that a lack of understanding regarding habituation is something many marketers face as a struggle. Habituation can be defined as the bombardment of sales pitches, opt-ins and consistent phone calls pressuring for action, otherwise known as the things in which the human brain weeds out and deems irrelevant.

Latona Fox is urging businesses not to ‘become noise’, they must take a step back and recognise where they can stand out, and gain customer attention. “Brands must learn to take their marketing skills to the next level and recognise what they’re doing right, and areas for improvement in order to prevent habituation,” declares Robyn Steel, Managing Director of Latona Fox.
