NRG Global Inc outline the five things professionals need to quit to succeed.

Quitting is not a word often used by Chicago Based NRG Global. However, the direct sales and marketing experts have highlighted five things aspiring professionals must stop in order to succeed.

As we all grow up, we are often given the mantra of “never give up” or “Do not be a quitter” to the point where we have internalized it so much that we feel guilty if we lose interest in reading a book or during exercise. While persistence is usually a good trait for success, sometimes the opposite is the better option and quitting is the most effective course of action.

New research from the University of Rochester found that people are motivated by either “approach goals” or “avoidance goals.” – Approach individuals are those that are driven by challenges but don’t waste their time trying to solve issues that have unfeasible answers. They know when to quit.

Those that fall under "avoidance goals" worry far more about failing. They don’t see the positives that could come from it, so try to avoid failure at all costs. They keep trying to fill the holes long after rational logic would imply its time to move on. Often a far less productive method of working.

NRG Global has devised a list of things that we should all quit doing:

1.) Stop putting off tasks and do them now!

Building up the courage to starting something new is often particularly hard. It's always easier to adopt the mindset of “I’ll do it tomorrow” and continue to be comfortable. The issue with this is tomorrow often never comes, and people continue to use this excuse rather than getting their hands dirty.

2.) Stop self-doubt

Confidence is critical in any aspect of life. Sometimes all you need in order to reach the next level in your career is confidence in yourself and your ability. You have to believe it, if you don’t, nobody else will.

3.) You always have a choice

It's neither healthy nor feasible to believe that you don’t have an alternative. There is always another option. Always feeling like a victim who is on a constant road of haplessness is not going to help you. To succeed at the highest level, you have to stop thinking you’re the victim.

4.) Stop assuming things will work out on their own.

It's a nice mentality to have, hoping that everything will work all right in the end. It won't. You have to make it work yourself. Don’t expect anything from anyone, go out and get it yourself. You have to proactive to seek change and take responsibly for yourself.

5.) Don’t be a yes man/woman

Stop saying yes to everything, if you have too much on your plate, say no. A study by the University of California found that the more you resist saying no, the higher the chance of stress, burnout and depression. Don’t be afraid to say it.

NRG Global offer their contractors and staff a tried and tested personal development scheme that will encourage the best out of them and help them to achieve their goals. Through a fantastic one-to-one mentoring program where they get to learn from industry veterans, regular workshops and unrivalled networking opportunities.
