Local heroes from across the borough sought for awards bash

If you know a neighbour or group that goes the extra mile to support you or your community, Six Town Housing has a way for you to let them know how much you appreciate them.

Six Town Housing's annual Community Stars Awards recognise the often unrewarded work of people who play a constructive role in the area where they live. Those shortlisted for the awards can attend a special ceremony at the Elizabethan Suite in Bury this November, with live entertainment courtesy of Bury College students and lunch. Overall winners will receive trophies and voucher prizes.

Categories include Volunteer of the Year, Best Community Project, Best Environmental Initiative, Young Rising Star, Retirement Living Award, Inspirational Individual, Good Neighbour Award, Success Story Of The Year and Safer/Improved Community Award.

Nominated individuals and groups need to be based within the neighbourhoods that Six Town Housing manage on behalf of Bury Council, but they do not necessarily need to be council tenants.

Judging for the awards will be carried out by several winners from 2016; Andy Howarth from Clarks Hill in Prestwich (Retirement Living Award winner), Dorothy Wood from Abbey Close TRA (who collectively won the Best Green Initiative award), and Sophie Molloy (Young Rising Star winner).

John Merrick, director of neighbourhoods at Six Town Housing, said, “Our awards highlight unsung community stars who strive to make their area a better place for all, often with no expectation of reward. We usually receive a diverse range of applications and enjoy reading about all the good news stories happening across our neighbourhoods.”

Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, cabinet member for finance and housing, will be providing a speech at the awards and meeting attendees. He said: “This event is a fantastic opportunity to show our appreciation to those who truly make our borough a great place to live in. I am looking forward to expressing my thanks, on behalf of the council, to these amazing people."
