Urgent gas works start Monday at busy Bury junction

• National Grid engineers to do urgent work to fix leaking gas pipe

• Temporary traffic lights on A58 junction

 • Work expected to take around three weeks to complete

National Grid engineers start work on Monday on repairing a leak on a gas main at the junction of Bolton Road, Bury and Watling Street in Bury.

Temporary traffic lights are expected to be in operation at this busy junction for around three weeks. Engineers will be working to mend a leak on an 18 inch diameter cast iron gas pipe.

Kevin Booth, Project Engineer said: ‘The gas leak is on the underside of the gas pipe. To fix it, we plan to cut out the damaged section of pipe and replace it with a new piece. The leak is on a very busy road junction on the A58 and our work will inevitable have some impact on drivers in the area.

“We apologies for this, but it is important that we stop the gas escape. It will take us a few weeks but once the work is finished, the people of Bury will be able to carry on enjoying a safe and reliable gas supply. It won’t be necessary for us to turn anyone’s gas off while we repair the main.”
