A golden moment for Radcliffe Hub

The £40 million Radcliffe Hub project currently on site in Radcliffe town centre is moving on at pace.

Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, leader of Bury Council, along with chief executive Lynne Ridsdale, recently joined members of the Vinci construction team with ward member Councillor Carol Birchmore for a “golden bolt” ceremony, marking a major milestone in the near completion of the new building’s framework.

Attendees also toured the site to witness first-hand the significant headway across the project.

Construction of the building frame began during the winter of 2024. Since then, around 1,730 steel pieces have risen from the ground, fixed together with more than 12,400 bolts to form the perfect skeleton for the transformation that is to come.

When complete, Radcliffe Hub will bring key services together in state-of-the-art facilities, providing a permanent new home for leisure, a new library, learning opportunities, community space and enhanced support for health and wellbeing.

The project also includes conversion of the basement area at Radcliffe Market, redevelopment of Market Chambers and a link building to join the two.

Cllr O’Brien said: “Our ambitious plans to revitalise Radcliffe are becoming a reality, and the transformation is clear for all to see. The multi-million-pound Radcliffe Hub is set to bring a wealth of new services and facilities right into the heart of the town centre - creating exciting opportunities for residents to lead healthier, more connected lives.

“The Radcliffe Hub is truly going to be a game changer for the entire community, marking a bold new chapter in the town’s future.”

The modern-day leisure facilities will include:

  • 25m 6-lane adult pool
  • 15m x 10m learner pool
  • Poolside seating for up to 150 spectators
  • 100-station gym
  • Two good-sized fitness class studios
  • Four rooms for wellness consultations
  • Multiple Clip-n-climb climbing walls.

The new purpose-built larger library facilities will include:

  • A dedicated ground floor children’s library
  • New books and a local history collection tailored to Radcliffe
  • Access to e-books, e-audiobooks and e-magazines
  • Free public wi-fi and computer access on two floors
  • Reading and relaxation areas
  • Community space to support Radcliffe’s community groups and to provide opportunities for learning.

The Radcliffe Hub project is funded by UK Government (£20m) and Bury Council (£20m+).
