Better bus plans for Bury Interchange

Press release -

Better bus plans for Bury Interchange

Bury Interchange is set to get another exit to speed up journey times and ease congestion on the busy bus station.

Transport for Greater Manchester, which owns and manages the interchange, plans to build a new exit onto Angeloume Way to complement the one onto Haymarket Street.

The scheme is just one of a range of projects across Greater Manchester being delivered through the Better Bus Area Fund Programme, aimed at increasing bus use in busy urban areas.

Planning permission has been granted by Bury MBC and TfGM is now inviting bids to carry out the work later this year.

Councillor Mark Aldred, Vice Chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “Bury Interchange is one of the busiest bus stations in Greater Manchester.

“By reducing congestion on the interchange, the new exit onto Angeloume Way will cut down journey times and improve reliability of services for passengers.

“I look forward to seeing work start on this project later this year.”

Over a thousand bus services run through Bury Interchange every week day. It is one of 22 bus stations in Greater Manchester owned and managed by TfGM.

Greater Manchester was awarded a £5 million grant from the Department for Transport’s Better Bus Area Fund (BBAF) in 2012.

Through close partnership working between TfGM and the district councils the BBAF will deliver targeted schemes to provide bus priority improvements and better public transport interchange.

Other BBAF projects aim to change travel behaviour and support growth at the key employment areas of Trafford Park & Salford Quays – to provide improved access to employment opportunities in these economic growth points.
