Boost to jobs and the economy in Bury town centre

Council leaders are set to approve plans which would bring 250 jobs and a major economic boost to Bury town centre.

The council-owned 5-acre plot at Chamberhall Business Park, next to Peel Way, could soon become the head offices of Crown Power & Gas Limited.

It is estimated that the new premises will generate £8 million annually to the local economy, with an increase in visitors and spending in Bury town centre shops, cafés, and services worth £560,000 per year.

Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, leader of Bury Council, said: “This supports our priority to drive economic growth and aligns with our “Let’s Do It!” vision for faster-than-average economic growth and reduced deprivation.

“This scheme would deliver high-quality employment space in a sustainable, accessible location, and bring a long-term vacant brownfield site back into productive use, unlocking 7,000m² of flexible employment space for offices and industrial uses.

“It would also provide new skills and training opportunities, particularly for young people and those not currently in education, employment, or training.”

Crown Gas & Power is an award-winning gas and electricity supplier and utility connections provider, and has been ranked number one by Citizens Advice for the past four years. It currently serves approximately 2.5% of the UK’s commercial gas market and 1% of the UK commercial power market. The company is part of the wider Crown Oil Group, a family-owned business with longstanding roots in Bury and Greater Manchester. Over several decades, the Group has grown from its local base into a recognised provider of fuel and energy solutions to customers across the UK, with a continued focus on service, reliability and long-term investment.

Owned by a local family, the wider group’s business interests generate annual revenue of more than £1 billion and employ over 1,700 people within the region. The family already operates several businesses within the borough, including at offices and workshops in Pilsworth and the town centre, and is also investing heavily in Warth Business Park with the development of a new Adblue production facility.

The plans are due to be approved by the council’s cabinet tonight (Thursday 15 Jan).

Cllr O’Brien added: “This should also make Bury even more attractive to investors and businesses, and strengthen connectivity with the town centre, given its proximity to Bury Interchange and proposed residential developments in the town centre.

“This will hopefully lead to the establishment of similar developments, and diversify the employment offer in Bury, making the borough more resilient to economic change.”

Matthew Greensmith, Managing Director of the Crown Oil Group, said: “We’re proud of our roots in Bury and excited about the opportunity to develop a new headquarters for Crown Gas & Power that supports the business’s continued growth. This proposed move will give the team the space to grow, support training and development, and strengthen the service we provide to customers, while continuing to invest locally.’”

Crown Gas & Power is part of the Crown Oil Group.
