Bury Adult Learning Service retains ‘Good’ Ofsted rating

Bury Adult Learning Service has just been rated “Good” by Ofsted inspectors in its most recent inspection.

The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), digital skills and ICT curriculum areas were inspected, including the quality of education and training and leadership and management.

The report states: “Leaders have in place a clear strategy for their adult learning provision built around the needs of the local community. They have designed the curriculum for learners to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours they need to move into employment or further study or to play a productive role in their local communities.”

During the two-day inspection, the inspectors spent time with the learners and in the report highlighted how learners are very happy with their courses and enjoy making new friends in a welcoming and relaxed environment. They feel accepted and proud of the skills they develop.

The service was also praised for introducing a mental health curriculum that supports learners to improve their confidence and prepares them to move on to further study or work.

Joanne Hatton, acting head of service, said: “I am very pleased that Bury Adult Learning Service has received this ‘Good’ Ofsted outcome, and especially to read and hear about the impact our courses and the wider support we provide has on our learners. I am exceptionally proud of our staff for the work they do in supporting the current and future learning needs of our Bury communities.”

Councillor Tahir Rafiq, cabinet member for corporate services and HR, said: “People should be able to learn at all stages of their life, whether to gain new skills or simply for enjoyment. Thousands of Bury residents take advantage of the courses that our adult learning service offers, and I am delighted that the quality of provision has been formally recognised by Ofsted.”
