Bury celebrates World Social Work Day with pledge to “leave no-one behind”

Social workers in Bury who support children, young people and adults are to mark World Social Work Day tomorrow with personal and team commitments to “leave no-one behind”.

The theme of the annual event, held this year on Tuesday 15 March, is “leaving no-one behind” and Bury Council’s social work teams will be spending the day working together to strengthen their team-working and methods.

The council’s portfolio holders for children’s and for adults’ social care will also praise the work of social workers in supporting people to achieve their potential by solving problems, arranging support and making a difference.

The awareness day comes as Bury Council is running recruitment campaigns to build its social work teams and respond to the need for support in the borough’s communities.

Drop-in sessions for children and young people’s social workers will focus on team members’ personal commitments and ideas. The words they use will be developed into a display that will be used in their offices and in the New Kershaw Centre, which is also a youth centre.

Children and young people’s social workers will also take part in team development and training during the day.

Adult social workers – who often support older people to continue to live at home, or help people with disabilities – will take part in team development activities through the day.

Councillor Tamoor Tariq, cabinet member for children’s services, young people and skills, said: “Our hard-working social workers make a positive difference to the lives of children and young people in Bury.

“They provide support at times when things may be difficult at home in their lives, working with them, their families and carers to overcome their challenges and help them achieve their potential.

“It is a tough but rewarding job. We have a great team and I hope more people will consider a career in social work with Bury.”

And Cllr Andrea Simpson, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, added: “Our Adult Social Work team make me extremely proud every single day. They support our most vulnerable residents, keep them safe and make a positive difference by focusing on what matters to them when they need it most.

“Tomorrow gives us an extra chance to say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for their commitment, resourcefulness and creativity to support people and families experiencing the most challenging of times.”
