Young people and children's staff celebrating at the Believe and Achieve awards

Press release -

Bury comes together to celebrate care-experienced young people at Believe and Achieve Awards

More than 300 people gathered at the Village Hotel for this year’s Believe and Achieve Awards last night (Thursday 20 November), celebrating the accomplishments of Bury’s children in care and care leavers.

The annual event, hosted by Bury Council, recognises young people who have gone above and beyond in education, sport, creativity, teamwork and in supporting their communities.

Foster carers, social workers, teachers and other professionals nominated 136 children and young people across a range of categories designed to highlight personal growth, teamwork and wellbeing, and a special “Carrick Signs Choice” award was also presented, highlighting three exceptional stories – including two young children who sold their toys to make money for Bury Hospice and a young man who made incredible improvements in his education journey.

Other winners included a young person who entered the performing arts world this year, gaining the confidence to join a local theatre group and audition for a pantomime, and a young person who has spoken up for themselves and their peers through Bury’s Children in Care Council and Care Leavers Forum, helping to shape changes and make sure their voices were heard.

The celebration also coincided with National Care Leavers’ Month. This UK-wide campaign champions the voices of care-experienced young people and recognises their right to be valued and supported as they move into adulthood.

Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, Leader of Bury Council, opened the evening, which featured a meal, DJ, and plenty of entertainment – from a photo booth and balloon artists to miniature dinosaurs, games, and dancing. Awards were presented by councillors, senior leaders and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tahir Rafiq, all proud to celebrate the achievements of our young people. One care leaver also shared a moving poem about her experiences, which was a real highlight of the night.

Chief Executive Lynne Ridsdale, who gave the closing remarks after the awards, said:
“It’s been a privilege to attend these awards and celebrate our young people and their achievements this year. These awards remind us how much talent and potential our care-experienced young people have, and this evening has been a wonderful way to recognise that.”

Councillor Lucy Smith, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:
“This is one of the most special events in our calendar, because it’s all about celebrating our young people for who they are and the amazing things they are achieving. Every nomination tells a story of perseverance and success, and it is inspiring for everyone involved in helping our children in care and care leavers to thrive.
