Bury Council commits to White Ribbon Accreditation

Bury Council is committed to taking the necessary steps to become White Ribbon Accredited in support of the campaign to end violence against women and girls. This commitment builds upon the work being undertaken through the Bury Community Safety Partnership on gender-based violence.

The White Ribbon campaign encourages everyone, especially men and boys, to make the White Ribbon Promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women. Becoming White Ribbon Accredited is an opportunity to further demonstrate our commitment to eradicate such violence.

There has been tremendous support for the campaign this year, which saw 16 Days of Action following the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November. The campaign saw community groups and faith groups come together to show their support, and included activities such as coffee mornings, artwork created by women at the Safenet Refuge in Bury, as well as a football match between Bury Council, public service partners and Bury College to raise awareness of the campaign.

Bury councillors pledged their support for the White Ribbon campaign ahead of the Full Council meeting on 7 December and the campaign was part of the discussions at the meeting of Bury’s Community Safety Partnership on 8 December.

This year, the White Ribbon Day coincided with the FIFA men’s world cup, and the campaign highlighted 11 traits men and boys can nurture to help create a world of equality and safety for women. Cllr Richard Gold, Cabinet Member for Finance and Communities and White Ribbon Ambassador said “There has been such a positive response to the White Ribbon campaign this year to support women’s safety and end violence against women and girls. Seeking White Ribbon Accreditation allows us to ensure this issue is embedded in all that we do and builds on our work on Women & Girls safety which we’re delivering as part of our LET’S Do It vision.”
