Bury Council proves it is a good employer

Bury Council has become a Member of the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter.

The charter is a voluntary membership and assessment scheme which aims to raise employment standards across Greater Manchester for all organisations of any size, sector or geography.

To gain Member status the council has had to meet several criteria which are:

  • Secure work
  • Flexible work
  • Real Living Wage
  • Engagement & Voice
  • Recruitment
  • People Management
  • Health & Wellbeing

Councillor Tahir Rafiq, cabinet member for corporate affairs and HR, said: “This is fantastic news. Becoming a Member of the GM Good Employment Charter not only shows our commitment to being a good employer but allows us to lead by example and encourage others to raise employment standards across the borough. We value our workforce and absolutely recognise the critical role they play in supporting our residents and communities and driving delivery of our Let’s Do It ambition.”

Ian MacArthur, director of the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter, said: “It’s been a pleasure to work with Bury Council as they progress to full Charter Member status. This is important not only for the council’s thousands of employees but also as exemplar to lead the way for other local employers across the borough.

“Taking steps to provide inclusive, fair and equitable working environments is the charter’s aim and one that we know is shared in Bury Council. Working with employers across the city region to do things differently is what makes Greater Manchester a great place to work and, as Bury Council joins our Membership tier, we’re looking forward to learning and sharing their good practice across the Charter movement.”

Bury Council is committed to raising employment standards across the borough and wants to encourage other employers to work towards achieving Membership status of the Charter. Being accredited as a Real Living Wage employer recently allows the authority to lead by example; Bury is the only Greater Manchester council to be both a Charter Member and a Real Living Wage accredited employer.

The council officially became a Member of the Charter on Thursday 9 December.
