Bury’s young voters elect their new Youth MP
Thousands of young people in Bury seized the chance to play their part in the democratic process.
They have elected a new student to represent the borough as Bury’s Member of Youth Parliament.
Schools and colleges in Bury set up polling stations and encouraged their students to vote in the elections.
More than 6,500 young people aged 11-18 voted in the election, which is 35% of the eligible cohort and much higher than the national average for Youth Parliament elections and higher than the turnout in many local council elections.
Alexandro Ghanem of Radcliffe (educated out of borough) was elected as Bury’s Member of Youth Parliament with 1,905 votes. He will be supported by two Deputy Members of Youth Parliament: Hannah Clark of Parrenthorn High School, who received 1,054 votes; and Tobias Dickinson of Bury Church of England High School, who received 765 votes.
Alexandro will represent Bury in the UK Youth Parliament at a local level, at a regional level and at a national level.
Cllr Noel Bayley, the Mayor of Bury, said: “It’s great to see so many young people getting involved in issues that affect them. I’m sure that Alexandro will be a fantastic ambassador for the borough, ably assisted by Hannah and Tobias.
“We are incredibly proud of all the candidates who stood in the election and hope they will all continue to contribute to Bury Youth Cabinet.”
