Business as usual for mayor following attack and robbery

Press release -

Business as usual for mayor following attack and robbery

The Mayor of Bury is back to her civic duties following a violent attack on her driver and the theft of two valuable chains of office.

In advance of Remembrance Sunday, Councillor Michelle Wiseman joined Colonel Eric Davidson in meeting poppy sellers at Asda Bury and Asda Pilsworth, M & S, the Mill Gate shopping centre, and B & Q.

Cllr Wiseman says it is ‘business as usual’ following last week’s robbery, in which her driver was hit
with a hammer and two Victorian chains stolen as he dropped her off following an official engagement.

“My focus this week is completely around Remembrance Sunday, when we remember all the people who gave their lives in the First World War and other conflicts in order to keep us free,” she said.

“I wish to thank everyone who send their good wishes to me and my driver Jet Vyas, who is now recuperating at home.”

Anyone with information about the robbery can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

· The Civic Service of Remembrance will be held on Sunday 9 November at Bury Parish Church.  The mayor will lead the processions from Bury Town Hall at 10.30am and proceed along Knowsley Street, Haymarket Street and Market Street to the War Memorial at Market Place.

Two minutes silence will be observed at 11am and the mayor, along with representatives of the armed forces and civilian organisations, will lay wreaths on the memorial.

This will be followed by the service of remembrance in the parish church, followed at 12.15pm by a “march past” of the various detachments with the mayor taking the salute.
