Call for Government to approve new Radcliffe high school

Council leaders are calling on the Government to give the green light to plans for a new Radcliffe high school.

A bid for funding, backed by the local authority, was submitted a year ago by Star Academies to build a new 600-place secondary school in the town.

Now the council is asking the Chancellor to support the proposals when he makes his Comprehensive Spending Review announcement later today in Parliament.

Councillor Tamoor Tariq, cabinet member for children’s services, young people and skills, said: “Parents in Radcliffe have waited years for the chance to send their children to a local high school. We ask the Chancellor to finally give us some good news today and give Radcliffe families the educational opportunities they need and deserve.”

And council leader Eamonn O’Brien added: “A new high school is absolutely crucial to our ambitious plans to regenerate and transform Radcliffe for generations to come. We’ve waited too long – now is the time for the Government to approve these plans and bring some Christmas cheer to the town.”
