Changes to Christmas and New Year bin collections

Residents are reminded that over the festive period, brown bin collections are paused from 22 December to 4 January, and during the same period, collection dates for grey, green and blue bins will change for most households.

• Tuesday 23 December will change to Monday 22 December.
• Wednesday 24 December will change to Tuesday 23 December
• Thursday 25 December will change to Wednesday 24 December
• Friday 26 December will change to Monday 29 December
• Tuesday 30 December (no change)
• Wednesday 31 December (no change)
• Thursday 1 January will change to Friday 2 January
• Friday 2 January will change to Saturday 3 January

Bins should be put out at the usual collection point by 7am, and all waste must fit inside the bins with the lids fully closed.

While extra bags of waste cannot be collected, they can be taken to the household waste and recycling centres, which are open every day except 25 December and 1 January.

Brown bin collections will be on hold due to reduced garden waste at this time of year, which also allows collection crews to concentrate on emptying the other bins, which can fill-up more quickly at this time of year.

Residents can help make the most of the space in their bins by squashing and flattening recycling items and by squashing and squeezing air out of bagged rubbish. Plastic pots, tubs and trays which were previously disposed of in the grey bin can now be recycled in the blue recycling bin.

Councillor Alan Quinn, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Climate Change said:

“Our crews will be out over the festive season, emptying bins to a revised schedule.

“We will do everything possible to keep collections on track, but we cannot rule out snow and ice or winter illness impacting our workforce and causing delays.

“If this happens, please leave your bins out so our crews can empty them as soon as they can.”

To assist crews with completing collection rounds as efficiently as possible, residents are asked to put bins out with the handles facing the road and park vehicles where they won’t obstruct the collection trucks.

Councillor Quinn continued: “If a collection throughout your street is missed, our crews will know about it and will return as soon as they can. But if an individual bin is missed, this can be reported online at www.bury.gov.uk/missedbin.

“And finally, extra household waste that won’t fit inside the bins can be taken to any household waste and recycling centre across Greater Manchester.“
