Press release -

Chocolates, flowers – without the bruises

Valentine’s Day brings anything but love and presents for too many people, say leaders of Bury Council.

They are urging victims of domestic violence to report incidents to the police and seek support from the many agencies who are there to help.

Jaria Hussain-Lala, strategy co-ordinator (domestic violence) with Bury Council, said: “Abusive relationships usually do not begin with violence, but often with gifts, flowers and romance. This then deteriorates into a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviour which often increases in severity over time. Relationships should be based on equality and respect, not violence and abuse.

“If you are experiencing violence at the hands of a partner or ex-partner or family members, there are agencies who you can contact and speak to in confidence.”

Councillor Sandra Walmsley, cabinet member for communities and community safety, said: “Our council has resolved to take a stand against domestic abuse, working with Greater Manchester Police, the NHS, housing providers, other agencies and, most importantly, local communities across Bury. We aim to make clear that domestic abuse in all its forms is unacceptable, and we appeal to victims to come forward and seek help.”
