Press release -

Christmas bin collections alert

Bury Council is reminding residents throughout the borough of Bury that their bin collections will be a day earlier than usual in the week prior to Christmas.

Collections on Tuesday 29, Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 December are unchanged and collections due on Friday 1 January will take place one day later on Saturday 2 January.

There will be no brown bin collections from 21 December to 1 January because garden waste is reduced at this time of year and most households will still have enough space in their brown bin for any extra food waste. Suspending brown bins for this short period also allows collection crews to put extra effort into emptying the other bins which can fill up more quickly at this time of year.

Residents can receive email reminders for all their scheduled collections and get updates if their collections are missed or delayed by signing up for Bury Council’s bin alerts at www.bury.gov.uk/bincollections

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, said: “This year has been a tough one for everyone, but it’s also been one that’s seen the best in people.

“I was especially proud of our waste service throughout the spring to summer lockdown when they kept the service going against all odds, and so many of you left them kind messages of appreciation on your bins.

“As we enjoy the festive season and approach the end of 2020, let’s spare a thought for those who have to clear up all our extra waste. Let’s show them some extra kindness this year and help make their job a little bit easier.

“Please take care to put the right stuff in the right bin, make sure your bin lids are fully closed and avoid parking vehicles where they will obstruct collection trucks.

“And finally, don’t forget that your green bin only likes clean paper, clean cardboard and absolutely nothing else - definitely no foil wrap or glitter cards.”

New rubbish and recycling collection calendars are currently being delivered to all households along with a Christmas information leaflet. Bin collection changes over the festive period are as follows.

Normal collection date Will change to
Tuesday 22 December Monday 21 December
Wednesday 23 December Tuesday 22 December
Thursday 24 December Wednesday 23 December
Friday 25 December Thursday 24 December
Tuesday 29 December No change
Wednesday 30 December No change
Thursday 31 December No change
Friday 1 January Saturday 2 January

Space can be saved in each bin by flattening and squashing all items but extra waste and recycling can be taken to any household waste recycling centre in Greater Manchester, as can real Christmas trees. Local centres are at Cemetery Road in Radcliffe, Every Street in Bury and Lumns Lane in Clifton. Opening times are from 8am to 6pm daily except on 25 December and 1 January when they are closed. More details at www.recycleforgreatermanchester.com.

Real Christmas trees can also go in the brown recycling bin as long as all decorations, lights and the wooden base are removed and after it has been chopped up it fits inside with the lid fully closed.

Used batteries should always be recycled, but don’t forget they cannot be recycled at home. They should not be placed in the grey household rubbish bin because they contain hazardous materials and are a fire risk. To find recycling points visit www.recyclenow.com
