Come and see the brand new Radcliffe Leisure Centre

Residents and families are invited to a special open day on Saturday 20 June to experience what the new £1.25m Radcliffe Leisure Centre at Spring Lane has to offer.

And to celebrate, all activities for children and adults – in the pool, studio and sports hall – will cost just £1 each.

The event comes just one day after former Olympic swimmers Steve Parry and Mark Foster will officially open the leisure centre and race alongside local primary school children from St Mary’s, Gorsefield, Wesley Methodist and Chapelfield primaries. They will be joined by other members of Team GB:Jo Jackson, James Goddard, Rosie Morris, Fiona McCann, Vicki Lucas and Yvette Baker.

The new leisure centre and pool has been funded by Bury Council. The pool, installed by private sector swimming business Total Swimming, is the UK’s first 25-metre demountable above-ground swimming pool and can accommodate up to 80 people in the pool with a viewing area for around 40.A new 48-station gym and new dry side and wet side changing facilities have also been created.

The council decided to establish the new centre after storms caused irreparable damage to the former Radcliffe Pool in December 2013.

The Open Day activities comprise:

In the pool:

* 11.30am to 12.30pm – Splash Time! Fun session with toys and floats for younger children.

* 12.30pm to 1.30pm: Pool time for all.

* 1.45pm to 3.15pm: Pool fun. Seriously good fun with floats for older children.

In the sports hall:

* 11.30am to 5.30pm: Badminton and table tennis.

* Noon to 3pm: Bouncy castle – for younger children.

In the studio:

* 11am to 11.30am: Insanity. Feel the burn in this 30-minute high intensity workout.

* 1.30pm to 2.30pm: Body Step and Piloxing. Try a fitness class in this mixed session.

At the event there will also be the opportunity to book children in for swimming lessons, tour the new gym and meet the I Will If You Will Team, whose ongoing mission is to get Bury women and girls more active, more often.

Anyone wanting to try out the facilities after the open day will have the opportunity to take out a limited period offer of all-inclusive membership for 30 days for £20. The offer is available until 31 July 2015.

Councillor Rishi Shori, deputy leader of Bury Council, said: “This is a fantastic new pool at a really handy location where we can also offer gym, sports and fitness facilities together on one site. The open day offers a great opportunity for the community to come along, have a good look around and try out the new facilities.

“Although our long-term plan is to build a brand new permanent leisure centre on the site of the old one, it’s really important we continue to provide accessible fitness facilities to our residents. I’m sure the people of Radcliffe will make the most of the pool and what Radcliffe Leisure Centre as a whole has to offer.”

Steve Parry, managing director and co-founder of pool provider Total Swimming, said: “The construction of a new temporary pool for Radcliffe is an important development for the local area and ensures that the community has continued access to first-class swimming and leisure facilities.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved with Bury Council, who had the vision and funding for this project, and together we are helping to make a difference to people’s lives.”
