Community clean-ups get under way
More than 40 bags of litter and rubbish were taken off the streets of Bury during the first of our LET’s Community Clean ups.
During National Volunteer Week, local heroes — residents, council staff, our brilliant operations team and cabinet members — rolled up their sleeves for the first LET’S Community Clean-Up around the Mosses Centre, East and Edward Streets.
And all reported incidents of fly-tipping were followed up and removed.
The day was just the first of a series of events which are being organised to demonstrate our four ‘LET’S do it!’ Community Strategy principles - Local, Together, Enterprising and Strengths – in action.
Volunteers from the council, local community groups and residents will join housing and operations staff and councillors to connect and engage with local communities.
Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who got involved from local residents to council staff and my cabinet colleagues.
“Our LET’S strategy is about working locally, making a real difference to people’s lives in the areas where they live.
“The day was about bringing people together and recognising everyone’s efforts, especially those who quietly make a difference all year round.
“Residents were able to see what we were doing and came to talk to us about issues in the area from litter to fly tipping. Four residents have even signed up to become a litter picker in the area.
“We’re so grateful for the hard work of our volunteers around the borough. The council’s street cleansing service provides a range of services and works hard to keep Bury cleaner and greener. Working with our volunteers we can have more of an impact.”
We’ve got 16 clean-up days planned across communities in the borough, this summer to live our Local values — building trust, working together and putting communities first.
