Community invited to battle invasive plants in Bury

The Big Bury Balsam Bash is back for its second year, inviting local residents, families, and nature lovers to come together for a hands-on conservation effort throughout May half-term.

The main event kicks off on 30 May at 10.30am at Burrs Country Park with Balsam Bashing events set to continue around the borough through to the end of July.

The aim is to tackle the spread of Himalayan balsam—an invasive plant species that threatens native wildlife and habitats. This grassroots-led project is one of a kind, bringing together Bury Council. Greenspace Volunteer Groups, the public, businesses and the Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

Organisers remark that it's about a lot more than just improving greenspaces: it also provides an opportunity to connect, have some fun and improve wellbeing.

Organisers are keen to make the event as welcoming and inclusive as possible. People of all ages are invited to take part and do as much or as little as they are comfortable with. No prior experience is needed as it's very easy to pick up.
