Council condemns theft from Radcliffe Cenotaph

Flag stones have been ripped up and stolen from the site of the Radcliffe Cenotaph.

The damage has been condemned by Radcliffe councillor Tony Isherwood, Bury Council’s cabinet member for the environment.

“People sometimes use the word ’mindless’ when it comes to vandals – I would use the word ‘shameless’ instead,” he said.

“The cenotaph is a memorial to the thousands of local people who gave their lives in the First and Second World War, and all other conflicts, so that we could be a free country today. To damage it is disgraceful, all the more at a time when we are marking the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli and 70 years since VE Day.

“I urge anyone who has information about this theft and vandalism to report it to the police.”
