Press release -

Council is one of country’s best places for apprentices

Bury Council has been named as one of the Top 50 Apprenticeship Employers of the year by the Sunday Telegraph.

The authority was praised for its pioneering Backing Young Bury project, and is one of only two councils to make the newspaper’s list.

The council set up Backing Young Bury in April 2010 to improve learning and working opportunities for young people in the borough, while also ensuring that the council has a skilled future workforce.

This campaign has led to a significant increase in the number of young people gaining apprenticeships and work experience – around 150 apprentices have been taken on by the council since 2010.

Councillor Mike Connolly, leader of the council, said: “Young people need and deserve every opportunity to develop their talent and take the first steps on the road to rewarding jobs and careers.

“We are committed to providing these opportunities through our Backing Young Bury project; from extended work experience placements and pre-employment training to an increased number of varied apprenticeships. It is heartening that this work is being recognised beyond Bury and a pleasure to make the Sunday Telegraph’s Top 50.”
