Council leads from the front to support disabled staff

Bury Council has again achieved Disability Confident Leader status for supporting disabled staff and potential future employees.

It reflects the inclusive and accessible recruitment process used by the council, the way it makes workplace adjustments, and ensures that staff are given relevant equalities training. This work forms part of the Council’s overarching Inclusion Strategy

Bury was the first council in Greater Manchester to win Disability Confident Leader accreditation in 2019, a ‘promotion’ from the Disability Confident Employer status it has enjoyed since 2016.

Councillor Tahir Rafiq, cabinet member for corporate affairs and HR, said: “The assessors were hugely positive about the work done in Bury to support our disabled employees. They also made some recommendations to enhance the work we are doing, which we will action.

“It’s essential that disabled people get a fair chance within the workplace, and the council also benefits from being able to recruit and retain from the widest possible pool of talent. We would encourage businesses across Bury to become disability confident too.”

Employers can find out more about the accreditation at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/disability-confident-how-to-sign-up-to-the-employer-scheme.
