Covid heroes invited to Jubilee celebration events

Hundreds of Bury people who played a key role in helping residents through the Covid crisis are being invited to a celebratory Jubilee lunch and church service.

To mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Mayor Elect Councillor Shaheena Haroon and the Reverend Julian Heaton, Rector of Bury Parish Church, are hosting two special events.

A Big Jubilee Lunch is being held at the Drill Hall at the Castle Armoury on Sunday 5 June, with afternoon tea and entertainment.

Immediately before the lunch, a service of thanksgiving will be held at Bury Parish Church where Rev Heaton will lead a service to mark the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II. The Bishop of Bolton, the Rt Rev Mark Ashcroft, will also preach.

Cllr Haroon said: “Over the past two years, an incredible army of people has helped our borough through the biggest health crisis in a generation.

“From people delivering the Covid vaccinations to those delivering food to vulnerable people during lockdown, there are so many local heroes who deserve our gratitude. A special ‘thank you’ to our NHS and social care staff and community volunteers, who have been the backbone of our Covid-19 recovery efforts – their heroic efforts will never be forgotten.

“This event is one small way we can say ‘thank you’ to every one of them. It’s also a great chance to bring communities together and get to know each other better, building on the kindness, resilience and spirit that we’ve all seen during the pandemic.”

Cllr Haroon, who is currently deputy mayor, will be installed as mayor at the council’s annual meeting next Wednesday (25 May).
