Cycle City ambitions for Prestwich

Work to make Prestwich more cycle-friendly will start in early February.

A route from Prestwich Metrolink station to Heaton Park is to be improved including providing a link from Heys Road to Rectory Lane, cycle lanes at the junctions of Rectory Lane/St Mary’s Road, traffic calming at the Heywood Road/Rectory Lane junction, and signing.

The work, costing £93,000, will be funded by Transport for Greater Manchester from an award of Cycle City Ambition Grant by the Department for Transport.

To complete the package, it is likely that the junction of Bury Old Road and Whittaker Lane will be signalised to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the A665. This work is expected to start in April and be completed by August.

Councillor Tony Isherwood, cabinet member for environment, said: “This grant from central government is to encourage the continued growth in cycling around Greater Manchester. We hope the investment in Prestwich will do three things: encourage cycle and ride using Metrolink, make it easier for families to cycle to Heaton Park, and offer a quieter route, via Heaton Park, for commuters to Manchester city centre.”
