Press release -

Don’t delay, do it today! Leader gets Covid booster

Council leader Eamonn O’Brien has just had his Covid booster – and is urging all local residents to get theirs as soon as possible.

He visited the Prestwich Walk-in Centre today to get his third jab, one of several clinics in the borough which is offering bookable and walk-in appointments.

Cllr O’Brien said: “I want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all our heroic NHS staff across Bury, and all the volunteer marshals and admin staff who have been carrying out the biggest vaccination programme in the nation’s history. Their magnificent efforts are keeping people alive and giving us crucial protection against this terrible virus.

“But the infection rate in Bury is now 864 per 100,000 population – the highest it has ever been. The rate is also rising among those aged 20 to 40, which suggests that the protection offered by the first two doses is wearing off – which is why it’s so important to go for your booster.

“Around 75,000 booster jabs have been given out in Bury, but that is only 67% of those eligible so far – those who had their second jab at least 91 days ago. And there are still many people who have not yet had any vaccinations at all.”

Details of vaccination clinics, which include both walk-ins and bookable appointments, are here: https://www.bury.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=15987

Cllr O’Brien added: “It’s been a year like no other, but – thanks to the vaccine rollout - we are in a better position than we were 12 months ago.

“I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. But please give yourself and your loved ones the best Christmas present they can have this year – don’t delay, get your vaccination today.”
